Gunman Barricaded in Jacksonville Grocery Store Taken Into Custody After Standoff

A 38-year-old Jacksonville man, Amado Urquiza, was taken into custody without further incident on Sunday, April 20, 2025, after a four-hour standoff at the Super Gallo Mercado grocery store.  

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, officers responded to the 1000 block of South Jackson Street following reports that a male subject entered the store and then the office. The store was subsequently evacuated. The subject fired his first three rounds inside the store, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.  

Jacksonville Police secured the area and requested assistance from the Cherokee County SWAT Team, which includes personnel from the Jacksonville Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department. The SWAT team responded promptly after the subject barricaded himself inside the grocery store.  

During the standoff, the subject fired approximately ten more rounds while officers were inside the store. The Texas Department of Public Safety SRT and Crisis Negotiation Response Team also arrived on the scene. After approximately four hours of tactical callouts, Urquiza was taken into custody.  

The Jacksonville Police Department expressed gratitude to all assisting agencies for their coordinated response and swift action in ensuring community safety. Authorities stated that there is no ongoing danger to the public but have not released further information due to the ongoing investigation.
