On July 5, 2023, authorities were alerted to the distressing discovery of an abandoned newborn baby in the 600 Block of N. Central Expressway in Plano. The Plano Police Department immediately responded to the call, along with members of the Family Violence Unit, to ensure the welfare of the child and locate the mother.
The infant, wrapped in a towel, had been left at a local business by an unidentified male and female who claimed to have delivered the baby only hours before. Patrol units and investigators initiated an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the individuals involved.
Plano Fire-Rescue promptly arrived at the scene and transported the newborn to a nearby hospital in Dallas, where medical professionals confirmed the child to be in good condition. Meanwhile, the Family Violence Unit was able to ascertain the identities of both the mother and father of the abandoned baby.
While the investigation is still ongoing, the Plano Police Department would like to remind the public of the Safe Haven law, also known as the Baby Moses law. This law offers a safe and legal option for individuals who are unable to care for their child, allowing them to leave their infant with an employee at designated safe places such as hospitals, fire stations, free-standing emergency centers, or emergency medical services stations. Importantly, those who utilize this law will not face prosecution for abandonment or neglect.
Authorities are urging new parents who find themselves unable to properly care for their newborns to seek help without hesitation. There is no shame in asking for assistance, and ensuring the well-being of the child should always be the top priority.
