Frisco Police Department Deploys Flock License Plate Reading Cameras to Combat Crime

The Frisco Police Department has announced the installation of Flock license plate reading (LPR) cameras throughout the city as part of its efforts to enhance public safety, reduce crime, and aid in solving cases.

The strategically placed cameras are designed to capture rear vehicle images and license plates, sending real-time alerts to officers when a stolen vehicle, a vehicle tied to a wanted suspect, or one associated with a missing person in an AMBER or Silver Alert is detected.

Key details about the Flock LPR system include:

  • The cameras are operational in over 5,000 communities nationwide, with some areas reporting crime reductions of up to 70%.
  • Frisco’s cameras are not used for traffic enforcement, and images do not capture people or faces.
  • Data is stored for 30 days and is not sold or shared with third parties.
  • The Frisco Police Department has implemented a policy regulating the system's usage, and usage statistics are accessible through Flock’s Transparency Portal on the department’s website.

Frisco Police Chief David Shilson expressed gratitude to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicle’s Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority for awarding over $437,000 in grant funding to purchase the system. He also acknowledged the efforts of the department and Frisco City Council in securing the grant and supporting the initiative.

“The addition of the Flock LPR camera system is a technological game changer for our community, allowing greater collaboration with surrounding agencies and enabling us to better direct resources to apprehend felony suspects quickly,” Chief Shilson stated.
