The City of Jacksonville's police chief, Joe Williams, has been dismissed after five years in the role, following a series of what the city manager described as “poor judgment.”
City Manager James Hubbard announced the decision on Friday, explaining that Williams’ tenure had been marred by a pattern of “disengagement and disrespect.” Hubbard also referenced a previous investigation in 2022, during which Williams was placed on paid leave for approximately one month.
In his statement, Hubbard said, "A pattern of poor judgment, disengagement, and disrespect culminated in my decision. I wish Mr. Williams well and look forward to naming a new chief who will provide the service and professionalism deserved by the department, organization, and community."

Assistant Chief Steven Markasky has been named the acting chief of police. Markasky, a Jacksonville native, has served the department in various roles since 2012, including as a field training officer, special weapons and tactics team leader, and canine handler. He will oversee a smooth transition until a permanent replacement is appointed. The city plans to release details regarding the search for a new police chief at a later date.
