SWEPCO Prepares for Severe Weather, Urges East Texas Customers to Make Winter Weather Plans

SWEPCO is actively monitoring forecasts of severe weather expected this weekend, with fierce winds, thunderstorms, and possible tornadoes in its southern service area, followed by snow and freezing rain in the northern regions next week. The extreme conditions, which could impact Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, may disrupt service, and the utility provider is urging customers to prepare now.

The company has implemented proactive measures to winterize its infrastructure, ensuring reliability during cold weather. Customers are advised to prepare emergency kits, plan for power outages, and stay informed about changing weather conditions, especially those who rely on uninterrupted electricity for health needs.

"We are closely monitoring the severe weather and storm potential across our service areas, and our teams are ready to respond quickly," said Drew Seidel, SWEPCO vice president of Region Distribution Operations. "We encourage our customers to stay aware and take necessary precautions."

Severe thunderstorms are expected Sunday across East Texas, Southern Arkansas, and North Louisiana, with winds reaching up to 65 mph and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. Later in the week, freezing temperatures could affect the northern areas, and SWEPCO is prepared to address any service interruptions.

Customers can access real-time updates and safety tips through the SWEPCO app. The utility reminds everyone to avoid downed power lines and report them immediately.

SWEPCO’s Winter Preparedness plan includes winterization of power plants, storm hardening, and continuous equipment monitoring to ensure safe and reliable service during extreme weather. The company advises customers to save energy, check home systems, and gather supplies in case of power outages.
