A major fire broke out on Tuesday, resulting in a devastating explosion caused by fireworks at The Firehouse Nine Farm Event Venue. The incident has claimed the life of Jared Scott Maddox, a 58-year-old resident of Gilmer, whose identity was released by Upshur County Sheriff Larry Webb on Wednesday. Four others were reported as injured in the accident, although their names and current conditions have not been disclosed.
According to statements from ATF Agent Kevin Mack, the individuals involved in preparing the fireworks at the venue were in the final stages of assembling approximately 300 three-inch fireworks shells when tragedy struck. Evidence and witness testimonies suggest that the explosion was triggered by an electric match connected to one of the shells, as stated in the press release.
The Upshur County Sheriff's Office received a distress call about the major fire at The Firehouse Nine Farm Event Venue at approximately 10:33 a.m. on July 4. Deputies swiftly responded to the scene to find the area engulfed in flames and smoke, with the situation rapidly escalating due to the involvement of fireworks and other hazardous materials.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and initial findings suggest that the accident occurred during preparations for a future event at the venue. The investigators have not identified any signs of foul play, indicating that the explosion was a tragic accident rather than a deliberate act.
