In August 2024, Morris County Sheriff’s Deputy Macey Stewart uncovered a disturbing plot involving Mark Anthony Johnson, 49, of the Naples, Texas area, to abduct and murder another individual. The investigation, led by Sheriff’s Investigator Sergeant Kellie Hooper, quickly mobilized a team, including the Texas Rangers, to prevent the plan from being carried out.
Sergeant Hooper and Texas Ranger David Stewart developed sufficient probable cause to obtain arrest and search warrants for Johnson’s property. After crafting a meticulous plan to apprehend Johnson without harm, the operation was executed on Monday, August 13, 2024. Sheriff’s Office Corporal Bruce Thompson, Deputy Darrius Everett, and Texas Ranger Joshua Mason successfully took Johnson into custody without injuries to him or the officers involved.
The search warrant revealed an alarming cache of materials Johnson had collected to carry out the crime. Investigators recovered deadly weapons, a large quantity of chemicals, and various items intended for the kidnapping, torture, and murder of the intended victim. Authorities also found supplies intended to destroy evidence after the crime was committed, underscoring the severity of the plot.
Johnson has been charged with Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder and is being held at the Morris County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.
Sheriff Jack Martin commended the swift and precise actions of the investigative team. "I deeply appreciate the diligent and efficient work of my team of investigators and the Texas Rangers who worked long hours to get Johnson taken into custody before anyone was harmed," said Sheriff Martin. "I’m proud of them for capturing him without anyone being injured."
