On Wednesday, September 4th, at approximately 9:30 AM, Panola Charter High School administration informed the Panola County Sheriff's Office that a firearm had been found inside a student's vehicle on campus. Deputies responded and learned that a student had been overheard discussing a firearm in his vehicle. A search by school staff revealed a loaded .38 caliber handgun.
The 17-year-old student was taken into custody for possession of a firearm in a prohibited location, a felony offense, and was transported to the Detention Center for processing. He was interviewed by PCSO Criminal Investigators, and the Mental Health Deputy conducted a Crisis Intervention Follow-Up.
Authorities stated that there is no reason to believe the incident was related to any school-related threat, and no specific student or campus was targeted. The PCSO emphasized its commitment to campus safety and thanked the school administration for its cooperation.
