On August 6, 2024, Correctional Officer IV Eze Nwangwu, employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), was arrested for smuggling contraband into the Memorial Unit. The arrest was made by investigators from the Office of the Inspector General after Nwangwu failed a routine search upon entering the facility.
Further investigation revealed that Nwangwu had a Ziploc bag containing a lighter, two AirPods, two audio splitters, four USB Type-C lightning adapters, one USB charging brick, five lightning cables, three sets of CZ earrings, a 200 mL bottle of Taaka vodka, and 21 loose cigarettes. Nwangwu also admitted to having additional contraband in his vehicle.
