In the late hours of June 14, 2023, a routine traffic stop in Cumby resulted in the arrest of 63-year-old Kerry Kinsey after the discovery of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The incident unfolded when an officer from the Cumby Police Department noticed a vehicle with expired registration operating on a public roadway.
As the vehicle approached the South I-30 frontage road, the officer observed the driver's failure to use a turn signal within the required 100 feet. Concerned about the potential traffic violation, the Cumby PD officer initiated a traffic stop and approached the driver, later identified as Kerry Kinsey. A deputy from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office was also present at the scene to provide assistance.
Upon making contact with Kinsey, the officer instructed him to exit the vehicle, which he complied with. During a routine "pat down" procedure on Kinsey's person, the officer noticed a suspicious movement as Kinsey reached for his right pocket. Sensing potential danger, the officer attempted to restrain Kinsey, who then resisted the officer and the Hopkins County deputy.
After a brief struggle, Kinsey was successfully detained by law enforcement. Upon further investigation, officers discovered that Kinsey had been concealing approximately 2.96 grams of a white crystal-like substance, believed to be methamphetamine. Additionally, a glass pipe commonly associated with the use of methamphetamine was also found.
The Cumby PD officer and the Hopkins County deputy took Kinsey into custody, and he was subsequently charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Kinsey is now awaiting further legal proceedings.
