Student Arrested for Firearm Possession at Sulphur Springs High School

Sulphur Springs ISD Superintendent Deana Steeber issued a letter to parents on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, addressing a concerning incident at Sulphur Springs High School.

According to the letter, the school administration received a report in the morning regarding a student in possession of a prohibited item. Subsequently, a firearm was discovered during the investigation. The campus administration promptly confiscated the weapon, secured the campus, and informed the police department.

A 17-year-old male student was arrested by the Sulphur Springs ISD Police Department and taken to the Hopkins County jail without further incident. The safety of students and staff remains the top priority for SSISD, with zero tolerance for prohibited weapons on campus. Violations of this policy will result in severe consequences in accordance with school policies and state law.

While the investigation is ongoing, it appears to be an isolated incident with no involvement of other students. Parents are urged to discuss gun safety with their children and emphasize the illegality of bringing any type of weapon to school. Additionally, they are encouraged to remind their children to report anything suspicious.

The school assures parents that they are actively addressing the situation and working to maintain a safe learning environment for all students.
