In Paris, Texas, on Monday, April 22, 2024, a troubling incident unfolded involving Paris Police officers and a 25-year-old driver identified as Alex Carson Demato. As officers were concluding an incident in the 2100 block of Bonham St., Demato's vehicle collided with a parked Patrol Unit. The patrol car had been properly positioned with all emergency lights activated. However, Demato's vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high speed, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles.
Upon making contact with Demato, officers observed signs of intoxication. Subsequent testing confirmed his impairment, leading to his transport to a medical facility where a blood sample was taken under the authority of a search warrant. Adding to the gravity of the situation, it was revealed that Demato had a young child with him at the time of the accident. Although the child was secured in a safety seat, it was found that the child was not adequately restrained.
Medical attention was provided to the child by Paris EMS, who transported them to Paris Regional Medical Center for evaluation. Following assessment by hospital staff, the child was released into the care of another family member.
In light of these events, Demato has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Under 15 years of age in the vehicle, which constitutes a felony offense.
