Suspect Leads Bogata Police on High-Speed Chase, Fires Shots, and Faces Multiple Charges

On the night of April 13th, 2024, Bogata Police Department Officer Roddy Hutchings responded to a call regarding a suspicious individual in the Dollar General parking lot after closing hours. Concerned store staff had reported the presence of a white male in a white passenger car. As Officer Hutchings approached, the driver fled the scene at high speed.

A pursuit ensued, with Officer Hutchings and additional law enforcement personnel from Red River County joining in. The suspect drove recklessly, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph. In the vicinity of Deport on Highway 271, the suspect fired a handgun multiple times at Officer Hutchings from the driver's window but fortunately missed.

The pursuit continued until the suspect turned onto a county road and crashed into a ditch. Bogata Officers and Red River County Deputies conducted a high-risk stop and apprehended the suspect, identified as Daimon Kain Nelson.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen from Louisiana, along with a firearm found in possession of Nelson. Nelson faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a public servant, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, evading arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, reckless driving, and driving without a license.

The Bogata Police Department expressed gratitude to the Red River County Sheriff’s Office, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, Reno PD, and the Texas Highway Patrol for their swift response and assistance in the case. Nelson has been transported to Red River County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
