The Temple Police Department is currently investigating a missing person case involving 92-year-old Louise W. Shumate. The investigation led officers to a low water crossing located in the 3200 Block of Riverside Trail.
Utilizing a drone, law enforcement officers were able to locate a vehicle matching the description of the victim's car on April 13, 2024, about two tenths of a mile downstream along Pepper Creek. Upon closer inspection, officers confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Louise W. Shumate, with the victim found inside as the sole occupant. Unfortunately, the victim was discovered deceased within the vehicle.
According to preliminary findings from the investigation, it appears that Shumate attempted to cross the low water crossing on Riverside Trail, which was submerged at the time. The force of the water swept the vehicle off the roadway and into Pepper Creek, where it became wedged between several trees and eventually submerged.
Efforts are currently underway to recover the vehicle from the creek. Temple Police Department continues to investigate the case.
