Greenville High School Principal's Contract Renewed Amidst Overwhelming Support

Dr. William Stewart

The Greenville ISD Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, drew a remarkable crowd as the room overflowed with attendees rallying behind Greenville High School principal Dr. William Stewart. The surge of support came after a rally earlier that day, where students vocally endorsed Stewart's leadership within the school's gym.

One item on the agenda that stirred tensions as it proposed to "Consider and take possible action regarding termination of probationary contract at the end of the probationary period for the high school principal." Stewart, who assumed the role of principal in June 2023, was operating under a probationary contract due to his first year tenure.

However, the reasons behind the Board's contemplation of termination remained obscure, with no public explanation offered. Stewart expressed frustration during the meeting, revealing that his attempts to communicate with the Board had gone unanswered. Despite the uncertainty looming over his future, Stewart affirmed his dedication to Greenville, emphasizing his passion for the community.

Following a closed session, the Board of Trustees delivered a unanimous decision that elicited jubilant cheers from the assembled supporters: Stewart's contract would be renewed, securing his continued tenure as Greenville High School principal.
