A school bus from Mt. Vernon ISD has been involved in an accident today. Fortunately, all children and the bus driver have been checked by EMS and are reported to be uninjured.

Emergency services, including Franklin Law Enforcement, EMS, and the fire department, are currently at the scene to ensure safety and manage the situation.

As a precautionary measure, all children involved in the accident are being transferred onto another bus. They will soon be transported back to Mt. Vernon Elementary School where they will be reunited with their families.

Temporary closure of Texas Hwy 67 just west of Mount Vernon is expected due to the accident. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes until the situation is resolved.

UPDATE: Mt. Vernon ISD Superintendent Jason McCullough, Ed.D. has issued the following statement:

"At approximately 4:40 pm, MVISD bus #5 was involved in an accident on Highway 67 West. The bus was stopped to unload a student with lights flashing and stop arm out. A passenger truck was coming from the east and did not stop for the unloading and swerved into the bus causing it to be undrivable. Thankfully, the driver of the bus and all 18 students on board were uninjured and no on-site medical care was needed. EMS personnel did evaluate all the students and the bus driver and determined all were okay.  The driver and passenger of the truck were also not injured. All students were transferred to another MVISD bus and taken to the elementary campus to be reunited with their parents or taken by bus home.  We are grateful for the Mt Vernon Fire Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, and the Franklin County EMS for all their quick response to the scene."
