Two Polk County Sheriff's Office Detectives, Adrian Ontiveros and Christian Schanmier, responded to a shooting incident in Lake Livingston Village, East Texas, on March 1, 2024, at 10:42 am. The victim, who had accidentally shot himself in the leg, called 911 for urgent assistance. Upon arrival, the detectives found the victim losing blood and slipping into shock.
Detective Ontiveros promptly applied a tourniquet to stop further bleeding, while Detective Schanmier administered direct pressure and wrapped the wound with field dressing from his medical pouch. Their quick response and decisive actions stabilized the victim, keeping him conscious until EMS arrived.
Their efforts were crucial in saving the victim's life, as acknowledged by the Lifesaving Award they received on March 13, 2024. Family, friends, and colleagues joined in honoring Ontiveros and Schanmier for their heroism.
Sheriff Lyons commended their professionalism and bravery, highlighting their dedication to serving and protecting the community of Polk County.
