Wood County Jail officials reported an incident on March 21st, 2024, where an inmate was found unresponsive. Upon discovery, jail staff initiated life-saving measures before Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived. The inmate was then transported to U.T. Health Quitman, where they were pronounced deceased.
The cause of death remains undetermined, and the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the family. The individual had been charged and booked into the facility the day before on a Felony 1 charge of Injury to a Child.
Texas Rangers have been notified and will be leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inmate's death while in custody.
