On Monday, February 26, 2024, around 1:43 am, Gilmer Police Officers responded to reports of a suspicious individual in the 800 block of North Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered Craig Allen Smith, a 40-year-old white male, who matched the description provided.
During their investigation, officers made a grim discovery at a nearby residence. Vennessa Smith, a 41-year-old white female, was found deceased.
Smith was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. He has been booked into the Upshur County Jail on multiple charges, including Failure to Identify as a Fugitive, Providing False Information, an Outstanding Warrant related to Assault Family Violence Impeding Breath or Circulation, and Murder.
The bond amount of $1,030,000 has been set for Smith as he remains in custody at the Upshur County Jail.
