East Texas Man Found Guilty of Murdering Father, Receives Life Sentence

Michael Timothy Caffey

A Gilmer, Texas, man, Michael Timothy Caffey, 45, has been found guilty of murdering his father, Timothy Allen Caffey, 66, in March last year. Timothy Caffey was discovered dead at a home on Airstrip Road by roofers working on the house, leading to Michael Caffey's arrest on March 27, 2023. Evidence pointed to homicide, and Michael Caffey was booked into Upshur County Jail the same day.

The murder trial commenced on Wednesday, and both sides rested their cases Thursday morning. District Attorney Billy Byrd presented DNA evidence, focusing on a claw hammer as the murder weapon. Despite defense attorney Matthew Patton's arguments questioning the DNA evidence, the jury reached a verdict Thursday afternoon, sentencing Michael Caffey to life in prison.

The trial saw intense scrutiny over the DNA evidence, with Byrd and Patton sparring over its implications. Michael Caffey chose not to testify in his defense, and a request for a continuance to examine alternate DNA evidence was denied. Despite the debate, the jury swiftly returned a guilty verdict after less than an hour of deliberation.
