Ponnazhakan Subramanian

A McKinney man accused of murdering his 9-year-old son last year has died while in police custody, according to authorities.

Ponnazhakan Subramanian, 40, was found attempting suicide by hanging in his jail cell in early December, as reported by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in McKinney, where he passed away on January 20, 2024.

The tragic incident unfolded in January of 2023 when Subramanian fatally stabbed his son, Nanitin Ponnazhakan. The boy was discovered unconscious and bleeding in the family's garage by his mother, who then sought assistance from neighbors.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Subramanian harming himself with a knife inside the house. According to police documents, Subramanian's wife revealed to investigators that he had been struggling with depression and had expressed thoughts of wanting their family to die together.

Subramanian had been held at the Collin County jail on a capital murder charge, with his trial scheduled to commence later this month.
