On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at approximately 7:07 P.M., Mesquite Police Officers were dispatched to a shooting call in the 1600 block of Springwood Drive in the City of Mesquite. MPD Dispatch was notified that two people at the residence had been struck by gunfire. Upon arrival at the location, officers located an adult male with a gunshot wound to the neck area and a small child with a gunshot wound to the head area. The adult male was treated at the scene by MFD, and the child was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The wounds sustained by both the adult and child are considered non-life threatening in nature.
While enroute to the initial shooting call, officers were also notified of a shooting call being dispatched in the 1700 Block of Arial Drive. Upon arrival at that location, officers contacted an adult male who advised that as he was driving home several minutes earlier in the 1600 block of Springwood Drive, he observed a vehicle parked in the street. As he attempted to drive around the vehicle, he advised that he heard multiple gunshots ring out. The subject drove home and discovered that his vehicle had been struck numerous times by gunfire, at which time he contacted MPD.
Based upon the preliminary investigation, it does not appear that the residence or the two individuals struck by gunfire were the intended targets of the shooting.
