On December 31, 2023, at approximately 3 p.m., Crockett Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Among those involved was Vunterrious Leonard, known as "Booman," a 25-year-old resident of Crockett and a registered sex offender with an active warrant for Sexual Assault of a Child (2nd Degree Felony) issued by Houston County.
Upon arrival, officers located Leonard in the apartment complex and attempted to take him into custody for the warrant. Leonard resisted cooperation and fled on foot, leading officers through I.T. Williams Park and into a wooded area off Sycamore Street.
Assisted by Deputies from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement established a perimeter in the area. Crockett PD's K9 unit and a drone were deployed simultaneously to aid in the search. The drone tracked Leonard through the wooded area, prompting him to surrender by raising his hands. He then walked out of the wooded area towards a nearby Deputy, who took him into custody without further incident.
Vunterrious Leonard was subsequently booked into the Houston County Jail, where he was served with the warrant and charged with Evading Arrest or Detention, a Class A Misdemeanor.
