After a dedicated career spanning nearly three decades, Chief Ken McKeown bid farewell to the Terrell Police Department, officially retiring from his position. The city announced Deputy Arley Samson as the Interim Police Chief in the wake of Chief McKeown's departure.
Expressing gratitude, Chief McKeown acknowledged the unwavering support he received from the citizens of Terrell, Mayor Rick Carmona, the City Council, and City Manager Mike Sims. In a brief statement, he extended his appreciation to the officers and staff for their professionalism and friendship, emphasizing the privilege of working alongside such an exceptional team. Chief McKeown also thanked his wife, Kathy, for her steadfast support throughout his career.
Chief McKeown stated, "First, I would like to thank the citizens of Terrell, Mayor Rick Carmona, the City Council, and City Manager Mike Sims for their consistent support throughout my career. I would also like to thank the officers and staff for their friendship and professionalism -- I have been truly blessed to have such a fantastic team by my side. Lastly, I want to thank my wife, Kathy, for being my strongest advocate and sounding board. It has been an honor to serve Terrell, and I feel accomplished in knowing I contributed to the safety and growth of the community."
Starting as an officer in 1993, McKeown dedicated himself to serving the community, holding various roles such as Liaison, Patrol Captain, and Captain of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team. In 2017, he assumed the role of Chief of Police, overseeing critical divisions within the department and leaving a lasting impact through mentorship and relationship-building.
Chief McKeown's legacy includes a commitment to professionalism and integrity, evident in the growth and safety of the Terrell community. His efforts extended beyond daily operations, as he played a pivotal role in the development of a new, state-of-the-art police department equipped to meet current and future law enforcement needs.
City Manager Mike Sims acknowledged Chief McKeown's leadership style and genuine concern for the community, stating, "Chief McKeown's heart for people made a difference to many in our community. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for him and the police department he leaves behind."
