On December 19, 2023, the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office 911 Dispatch Center received a distress call from a man residing in the 2200 block of County Road 319, seeking psychological help. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, made it clear to dispatchers that he did not want police intervention despite having firearms in his residence and admitting to consuming alcohol.
The situation escalated when the man, known to law enforcement for prior notifications of violent and hostile behavior towards officers, refused to meet with responding officers at the roadside. Subsequently, he informed dispatchers of his intent to retrieve an AR-15 and indicated an intention to load the firearm and initiate gunfire.
Gunshots were reported by a deputy at the residence, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. An area containment strategy was implemented, leading to the closure of County Road 319 near FM 429.
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team, along with assistance from the Precinct 1 & 3 Constable's Offices and the Texas Department of Public Safety, mobilized to address the unfolding crisis.
To enhance situational awareness and ensure the safety of all involved, police deployed a drone. The unmanned aerial vehicle provided crucial insights as the individual exited his residence, entered his vehicle, and attempted to drive from County Road 319 to FM 429. Law enforcement successfully contained the situation, leading to the apprehension of the individual without further incident.
The man, whose identity is being withheld at this time, is now facing charges including deadly conduct, unlawful carrying of a firearm, and driving while intoxicated.
