In a distressing incident on December 17, 2023, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office responded to a call for help at 1235 Juanita Rd in Longview. At approximately 10:53 am, a distraught female, identified as 45-year-old Shelly M. Cantrell, contacted the sheriff's office reporting a need for assistance.
During the call, dispatchers heard what seemed to be a struggle, with a male voice in the background saying "no, no." The call abruptly ended after 7 seconds. Despite the interruption, dispatchers managed to reconnect with Cantrell briefly, determining the address to be in the western portion of Harrison County.
After the call ended a second time, dispatchers called back and spoke to an emotionally distraught male subject, identified as 48-year-old Charles W. Rogers, who expressed a desire to end his life. A third call was made, during which a male voice continued to say "no, no," while a female in the background revealed she had been shot in the thigh and urgently needed help. The male subject then asserted that nobody had been shot before the call ended.
Approximately 5 minutes after the initial call, patrol units arrived at the scene to find Cantrell in the driver's seat of a vehicle with a gunshot wound to her upper right leg. In the passenger seat, Rogers was unresponsive, showing signs of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Preliminary investigations indicated that Cantrell had been shot by Rogers following a verbal altercation while driving. Both individuals were stabilized by emergency responders and transported to local medical facilities for further treatment. Cantrell and Rogers underwent emergency surgery at the hospital.
The incident is under investigation by the authorities.
