Chasity Breann Head, 33, was sentenced to 18 years in confinement for each of the two manslaughter charges she faced in connection with the deaths of her children, Aiden Rice, 8, and Kyleigh Head, 13. The tragic incident occurred on July 5, 2022, during a traffic incident, leading to Head's arrest on May 30, 2023.
Head had pleaded guilty to the charges on October 24 and appeared in Judge Taylor Heaton’s court for sentencing on Wednesday. The sentences will be served concurrently, and Head was credited for time served.
During the court proceedings, family members provided testimonies. Head’s stepfather spoke on behalf of the state, expressing his grief over the loss of the children. Head’s cousin also testified, highlighting the close relationship with the deceased.
Representing the defense, the fathers of the children gave their statements. Kylee’s father described Head as a good mother and emphasized a positive co-parenting relationship. Aiden’s father, aware of THC in Head’s system during the crash, opposed pressing charges against her.
The state argued against probation, citing Head's admission to using marijuana after the incident. Despite claims of not being intoxicated during the crash, Head continued marijuana use for nearly a year. The prosecution sought 20 years confinement but agreed to not request consecutive sentences.
The defense requested probation or a maximum of five years confinement, asserting that Head will grapple with the consequences for life. The state countered, emphasizing the children as the victims.
Judge Heaton acknowledged Head's apparent remorse and the fathers' reluctance for imprisonment. However, he pointed to Head's continued marijuana use as a glaring negative. Consequently, he decided on a concurrent sentence of 18 years for each manslaughter charge with the right to appeal.
