Lamar County Grand Jury Indicts Suspect for Murder of Van Zandt County Man

A Lamar County Grand Jury returned an indictment on September 14, 2023, against David Brandon Bowlby, a resident of Kaufman County, in connection with the murder of Charles Peck, a resident of Van Zandt County. The indictment follows a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.

The incident dates back to March 1, 2023, when Lamar County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a report of a deceased individual discovered in a vehicle parked in a gated area along the 4400 block of State Highway 24. Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of 58-year-old Charles Peck, who had succumbed to gunshot wounds.

On Monday, September 18, 2023, David Brandon Bowlby was taken into custody in Kaufman County by a collaborative effort between Lamar County Deputies and Kaufman County Deputies. The arrest proceeded smoothly without any incidents. Bowlby was subsequently transported to the Kaufman County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of Murder, with a repeat offender designation. He is currently held on a $500,000 bond, pending transfer to Lamar County. The investigation remains ongoing.

Sheriff Scott Cass of the Lamar County Sheriff's Office expressed his appreciation for the diligent work of his Deputies and the Criminal Investigation Division Detectives, as well as Texas Ranger Stacy McNeal, in their efforts to bring the suspect to justice. Sheriff Cass noted that the investigation encompassed multiple aspects of technical information and evidence gathering, which spanned several months.

Furthermore, Sheriff Cass commended Kaufman County Sheriff Bryan Beavers and his team for their collaboration in apprehending the murder suspect, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in addressing the case.
