PRINCETON, Texas - The Princeton Police Department is responding to community concerns after a dog escaped from a residence while another law enforcement agency was executing a warrant and was subsequently struck and killed by a vehicle.
According to Princeton Police, the Collin County Sheriff's Office was the agency serving and executing the warrant at the residence where the incident occurred.
Although the home is within Princeton city limits, police said their department was not involved in the operation.
"The Princeton Police Department was not notified in advance that the warrant would be served, was not present during the execution of the warrant, and did not respond to the scene," the department said.
Police said no Princeton officers were at the location when the dog escaped or when it was later struck by a vehicle.
Police Acknowledge Community Concern Over Dog's Death
The department issued the statement after reports about the incident generated concern in the Princeton community.
Police did not provide details about how the dog escaped, where it was struck, the nature of the warrant or whether any measures were taken during the operation to contain animals at the residence.
Princeton Police expressed condolences to the dog's owner and family.
"We recognize how devastating the loss of a beloved pet can be, and we extend our sincere condolences to the dog's owner and family," the department said.
Because Princeton Police were not involved, the department said questions concerning the planning and execution of the warrant should be directed to the Collin County Sheriff's Office.
The statement did not identify the dog's owner or provide information about the investigation that resulted in the warrant.
Princeton Police emphasized that while the incident happened within the city, it was not a Princeton Police operation.
"We understand the concern and emotions this incident has generated throughout our community," the department said. "While this event occurred within our city limits, it did not involve the Princeton Police Department."
The department concluded by saying its officers remain committed to maintaining the trust and safety of Princeton residents.
