COMMERCE, Texas — Commerce Independent School District announced Wednesday that it has rescinded its employment offer to Sam Day for the position of Director of Operations following an internal investigation into controversial social media posts.
Day previously served as transportation director for Caddo Mills Independent School District and had recently been introduced by Commerce ISD as its incoming Director of Operations, highlighting what the district described as 15 years of experience in public education operations.
The decision came after social media posts surfaced showing Day allegedly mocking Hispanic names during a graduation ceremony in another school district and joking about Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, attending the event.
According to Commerce ISD, Superintendent Steve Drummond, CISD Police Chief Seth McDaniel, human resources officials, and district administrators conducted an investigation before the offer was withdrawn.
District officials stated Day had not yet begun employment with the district and was not under contract at the time the decision was made.
In a statement, Commerce ISD emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Commerce ISD takes great pride in the diversity of our students, staff, families and community. We consider that diversity to be one of our many strengths,” the district stated.
The district added that it remains committed to maintaining “a safe, respectful and welcoming environment” for students, staff, and families.
