ROCKWALL, Texas - Rockwall police took a man into custody Friday afternoon after he fired a shotgun in a parking lot, prompting nearby schools to be placed in secure status as a precaution.
On February 20, 2026, just after 12:00 p.m., the Rockwall Police Department responded to a disturbance call in the 1300 block of Ridge Road.
Investigators determined the male suspect became emotionally disturbed following an argument with his spouse and fired a single shot from a shotgun in the parking lot. Responding officers immediately secured the area. At the request of officers on scene, nearby schools were placed into “secure” status out of an abundance of caution.
Under a secure protocol, students and staff remain inside the building while exterior doors are locked, but normal classroom activities continue.
The Dallas Police Department’s air support unit located the suspect walking along railroad tracks in the area. Officers were able to take him into custody without injury. Authorities said the suspect was unarmed at the time of his arrest, and the shotgun was recovered near the original scene.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation and will face charges upon his release.
No injuries were reported, and officials said there was never a direct threat to the schools. The investigation remains ongoing.
