GREGG COUNTY, Texas — A 68-year-old inmate died Tuesday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency inside the Gregg County North Jail Facility.
According to the Gregg County Sheriff's Office, jail staff were notified at approximately 2:25 p.m. on February 17, 2026, that an inmate was experiencing a medical emergency in one of the dorms.
Detention officers and jail medical personnel responded immediately and found the inmate undergoing what officials described as a severe medical episode requiring lifesaving procedures.
Longview Fire Department EMS personnel were called to the facility and transported the inmate to a local hospital, where he later passed away.
In accordance with sheriff’s office policy and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, the Texas Rangers were notified and are conducting an investigation with assistance from the Gregg County Criminal Investigation Division.
At this time, officials say the death appears to be the result of an isolated medical episode, and no foul play is suspected.
The inmate’s identity has not yet been released. Additional information is expected once it becomes available.
