Hunt Regional Closes Commerce and Quinlan Emergency Rooms to Cut Annual Losses

GREENVILLE, Texas — Hunt Regional Healthcare and the Hunt Memorial Hospital District (HMHD) Board have announced the closure of emergency room services in Commerce and Quinlan as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the hospital system’s finances and ensure long-term sustainability.

The HMHD Board of Directors made the decision on September 23, 2025, citing rising costs, staffing challenges, and declining reimbursements. The two freestanding emergency departments officially closed on September 30, 2025.

According to hospital officials, the closures will save more than $15 million annually in direct operating expenses. The system will continue to operate Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, which provides full inpatient and emergency care, as well as seven urgent care clinics across the region, including the Commerce location and a new Quinlan urgent care clinic opening soon.

In a statement, Hunt Regional said that while the decision was difficult, it was necessary to preserve essential medical services for Hunt County residents:

“Increasing supply and labor costs, the growing number of uninsured patients, and declining payments from insurance companies and government payers have stretched the organization financially,” the statement read. “We can no longer afford to cover the significant losses from our freestanding ERs and still maintain the level of care our community expects at our main hospital.”

Earlier this year, Hunt Regional laid off 43 employees, streamlined vendors, and implemented efficiency measures in billing and insurance processing to improve revenue.

Hunt County EMS will continue to respond to 911 calls, transporting trauma patients to Hunt Regional Medical Center or other appropriate facilities based on severity.

Hunt Regional emphasized that the mission remains unchanged: to provide quality healthcare in a compassionate environment that strengthens the community.
